A letter from M[onsieu]r Celsius to the President, dated at Tornea, December 4, 1736 [cf. (15) 4 décembre 1736], concerning the progress made by the gentlemen of the Royal Academy in their design of measuring the degrees on the meridian in the North and of the difficulties attending the execution of it, was read.

Wherein he says that they have with great difficulty made a shift in two months time to take the measure of one degree of the meridian between Tornea and Pello, and to make an observation of the difference of the latitudes of the two places ; and are now setting out to Over Tornea's lying about the middle between, in order to measure a base on the ice of the great river ; which he says has been frozen over excepting some places where there are great cataracts ever since the month of October last.
