Chronologie de la vie de Clairaut (1713-1765)

17 novembre [1766] : ? écrit au Saint James's Chronicle :
If Mr Hume's heart had ever been indeed the friend of Rousseau, his philosophy and coolness might have treated M. Rousseau as a man under a strong and great mistake ; this would have been more for Mr Hume's glory, and would have given him an entire advantage in the affair ; but instead of this, to publish Mr Rousseau's letter to M. Clairaut [cf. 3 mars 1765 (1)], in order to blacken him the more, an to go on imputing all kinds of bad motives to Mr Rousseau's actions, shews that a philosopher when provoked, is not a better man at bottom than the poor mere bigots of every religion (Rousseau 65-98, vol. 31, p. 340).
