(31) 20 mai 1736 : À la Royal Society :
Part of a letter from M[onsieu]r Celsius to doctor Mortimer dated at Dunkirk April 18 1736 O.S. was read wherein he says that the committee appointed by the French King on the expedition to the North for making the experiments for finding the figure and magnitude of the Earth are already met at that place and design to depart on the Wednesday following. That the company consists of four members of the Royal Academy, viz M[essieu]rs Maupertuis, Clerault, Camus and Monnier ; to whom are joined the abbé Outhier and himself. That they have in their retinue a secretary and a painter, with five servants, besides a cook (RS, JBC 15, pp. 331-332).
